At the first sight (1)

During the semester break, now I am smiling in front of my computer and at the same time, the coffee already accompanying until now. I started to write the love story because it was a story that i think should be written in. Let me introduce myself, my name is Ali. Now, I am still pursuing my doctoral degree from one of university in Germany. I have a complicate love story but it was amazing, so that I should write it.

This noon, I met my close friend, they were my classmate during high school, Rahma and Fauzan. We shared our stories and the conversation has conical into, we should write our story. So, when i came back into my house, grab my little hero and hug my lovely Angel and started to imagine, what kind of story should I write.

It was, almost 10 years ago, when this story began.

My first day

"I never want to study into this school" I am started to mumble this morning. To be honest, i never want to study in this national highschool. However, because of my stupidity, i can't reach the best grade and jumped into this school.

" So today, maybe it's still an introduction section, it is not good"

I talk to myself while I drove on the way. Sadly, I forgot the way to reach my school, I am lost and late. I was punished because of my trouble. I don't know about introduction section because i never wanted to and don't hear anything. To overcome my madness, i started to introduce myself into someone and began to connect the friendship

So, i made a lot of friend and changing my perception that this school wasn't too bad. On the other hand, I realize that school wasn't totally bad when I admire someone at the my first sight. I saw a cute girl with a tiny face and strange voice. It was caught my attention and when i knew a little by little about her, I started to admire her. But, I don't know who is she because i don't pay attention when introduction section.

Day by day passed by and my curiosity about her has rapidly increasing. I cannot hold my feel because I want to know her BUT I was afraid to approach her. I declared that school wasn't bad after all. I pray to my God. "Oh Lord, Please give me a chance to talk with her". I believe my pray will be granted, I am sure.

This day, when we study and every student separated into several team, I was very happy because my team was next to her, It's mean I was able to sit close to her. And, this time, my pray was granted. There was a moment when my friend make a joke of me because of my strange voice, and suddenly the other friend start join him to mock me. I almost angry, but I suddenly muffling my mad when,

" Oy Ali, your voice is so annoying " , says Ardi

" Yes you are, maybe you are with with Ina Haha ", says Pita

Oh wait, who's ina? strange voice? Oh, it can't be, my pray were granted?

" Ina, come here, I'll introduce you with someone who has the same strange voice as you" Ardi

" What are you talking about, I'am not as weird as your thinking haha" Ina

" Just come here, here he is Ali, now each of you can know each other ahaha " Ardi

Oh god, Praise be with you. I force myself to talk and this,  I can't say more, that, You, God, the best. In the name of You, thanks God.

"Oh, umm, Hello, my name's Ali, .."

" Oh yes, I know you, you have a weird voice"

" O ya, so do you!"

" Haha hello my name is Ina, nice to meet you"

" Oh hi, good to know you, strange voice"

Our laugh has vibrate the classroom, and maybe started to draw the beginning of rainbow love.

Shadow of Me

Getting closer.

Something that should be thrown away, its getting closer now. Why? because there was plenty time to be wasted. As we know, every-on-of-us, has our nightmare and terrible-worrying. I felt, a couple weeks ago, something that worrying me so much has appear again, it was an expertise. I feel i don't have any expertise now. But, it was okay, it's just about the 'time-zone'.

Shadow will always chase us, and we can't deny it unless there was no light source or the light is perfectly perpendicular to us, from above. I want to say that, everyone has their own problem that always chase us like the shadow, say 'shadow of me'. If we think too much about it, we will afraid because the shadow will never left us. But, if we don't concern it too much, maybe we will forget about the appearance of our shadow, but remember, it isn't disappear. On the other hand, if we face it properly, it would be gone. We getting closer to the light source, the shadow will fly away. Or, if we alone in the darkness, the shadow will be shy.

In my terms, The light source is a something when we getting closer to our Creator. The darkness, if we focus on our life and ignore our surrounding. So, in short, to face the shadow is face it properly using your focus in solve it and left all the result to our Creator.

The appearance of our shadow, shouldn't be worried too much. However, face it is a must. But, left it forever is impossible. Let the shadow became our best friend in this enjoyable life.

My journey : An Awardee

Today, suddenly I want to write about my experience to pass LPDP scholarship stage.

I always feel inferior into myself, because I often met someone with outstanding level of their ability. However, there was one day, when I went back info my undergraduate campus, I met my former supervisor. I told him about my experience to be master student and shortly, I explain to him that I always being shy, feel inferior and other negative thinking because I ever met great people. He just ask me, ‘are you not special? Have you ever look at yourself, have you ever felt success? Why you don’t proud about what you have achieved? Strange’. It stabbed me so hard and He was right. So, I consider to write my story about LPDP because it’s one of my barrier, I always won’t to be labeled as an awardee because I don’t look like an awardee, I mean, I have no special ability compared to another awardee, but now, I understand that everyone has their weakness and neither to me. I should break this barrier and proud about myself.

So, it’s been a long journey before I obtain this scholarship. First of all, I was weird since I joined in UGM as student. As long as I know, when everyone enter the university because they want to study maybe, it’s a way to have great job or anything, I became a student because I want to study again. I don’t know, I have a dream to study in Europe. Thus, enter the best university was a first step to reach that dream. 

First, I already aims my target since my first day in university, STUDY ABROAD. Unfortunately, it was a great challenge here, I often forgot my orientation. 4 years in university, I can’t fully utilize it to archive my dream. Sometimes, I face a hard lecture, felt lazy and so on. It wasn’t as smooth as I imagine, but a sheer way. After my bad day in the first couple year in university, I have bad grade and suddenly I remember about my goal again. Gradually, I study hard and my grade significantly increasing, even though it wasn’t good yet, but for me, it was an outstanding achievement. As time passed by, perfectly I defend my undergraduate thesis, and I thought it was a good step to hardly pursue my dream again.

I have 2 choices, having a job first or straight applying into scholarship. After profoundly consider it, I decided to choose what was came first haha. Yes, I was offered a short period job in multinational consultant. In my opinion, the period to apply scholarship was still 3 month ahead, so I decide to have an experience by worked into company and at the same time I prepare my scholarship requirement. It wasn’t a fault, it was match with my prediction. I have many experience and by working was forcing me to open my vision wider than before. So, it would be a good stock for me. 

Second, after I finished my work, then I focus into fulfil the academics need according to scholarship and university entry requirement. I took English class, scheduling to take English test periodically, make a study plan perfectly, improving my speaking skills by attending international university seminar or make a small group to study English together, and shortly, in this period I collect all the data about scholarship, university, lecturing material, thesis planning and so on as many as possible. After I collect them, I made a SWOT analysis to determine which one is appropriate with my goal. After that, I met my lecture and everyone who already experience study abroad or a scholarship awardee to let me know how the real condition when I already obtain scholarship/study.

Third, actually I was applying not only LPDP scholarship, but also other several scholarship. But, I fail (mostly) due to an English skills and another consideration that I don’t know. So, I focus into LPDP scholarship. My effort wasn’t to hard because I already prepare everything I need like my explanation before. In this phase, my preparation just focus on how to prepare the every step of LPDP test.

Administration

For the essay, how to make a good essay, I already train my skill when I took IELTS class, and I think it was adequate to make a good essay. First tips, don’t be a liar. I never lie when I write an essay, I just write what I’ve been done and what I will do in the future. So there’s no special trick for me, because I already set my goal a long ago and this time I just summarize it.

Essay on the spot

Just make sure that you’re have an attention of your surroundings. I don’t like to read a newspaper because the content isn’t good, so many bad news and I just don’t like the media because it was filtrated by political agenda. But, for an essential issue, such as reclamation or major issue in Indonesia, I have a Principe, at least I must know a bit. So, because of this test, I force to read so many news than before ha ha. Make sure, when you write your essay, pay attention to its structure and how well organize your idea, started from general idea into conclusion. Your argument must be logic and don’t go wide from the main idea.

Focus group discussion

From what I know, there are 4 steps when having conversation with other, listen, listen, listen and speak. In this step, actually I don’t understand about the discussion topic, sure. However, I am just be careful with my attitude. Please don’t be arrogant and forcing your will into another, don’t break when someone still in their speech. In this phase, I am just waiting for perfect opportunity. The instructor gave us a time to discuss and preset the final words. In the early discussion, mostly everyone want to give their opinion as soon as possible. Like my previous experience, when the discussion began, some people scramble each other to give an argument. I thought it was perfect moment, I raise my hand right after the chaos and organize the way of discussion. I play role as a moderator and then I point another to be “notulen” (what is notulen in English haha) and so on. So with this strategy, I have much time to listen their argument and compile them, which side should be accepted and which side should be improved. I think it was perfect role but it would be better if we have deep argument. Please, pay attention to your discussion ATTITUDE.

Interview

There are two things should be prepared, what is your study objective and what would you do during your study? And what would you do after study?. Prepare the best and realistic answer to answer those question, of course according to your capacity. Again, don’t lie! Be confident with your answer. Make a good attitude into the interviewer.

Insanely, I was accepted for being an awardee.

Fourth, prepare everything related to your study and grant every promise that you’ve been made during scholarship test.

Hopefully, this journey help you and can inspire you. I am not an outstanding person, there lied much sky above sky. However, I just share what I pass and may help you to archive another phase.

Advance thermodynamics (week 1) Part 1.

Advanced Thermodynamics

So, this is my first post. I want to begin it with thermodynamics material, in advance of course. Although, it was labelled as an advance, but for the early meeting still manage about basic thermodynamics review. Hopefully you can enjoy it. 

 Week 1&2

Gas Power Cycle

Thermodynamics is a subject that study about energy and it form. Energy define as an ability to do work. First, I want to review about the law of thermodynamics. We study about energy in thermodynamics, but here we must know what kind of energy and its scope. There was 2 kind of energy in a thermodynamics approach, stored energy and energy in transition. Stored energy is an energy that carried by mass, It could be an entalphy, kinetic energy, potential energy. Energy in transition is an energy that pass and moving in and out into system. What is system? System is a part of universe that need to be studied and it is bordered by a boundary. So, energy in transition is an energy that income and outcome into/from a system in form of heat and work. According to the cengel, he stated that there are two important area in thermodynamics, namely, power generation and refrigeration. Both area was involving a cycle and divided into 2 cycles: power cycle and refrigeration cycle. Power cycle can be categorized as gas power cycle and vapor power cycle depending of its working fluid. Here, we will study about gas power cycle.

GAS POWER CYCLE

When we talk about gas power cycle, it means that the working fluid for entire process remains a gas form. Example of gas power cycle are Spark-Ignition Engines, Auto Ignition Engine, and conventional gas turbine. Before we go advance into an engine approach, we need to know that in every engineering problems involve a complex analysis. To make it easier, an engineer must use a great trick, an assumption and an approximation. We don’t need to analyze it using actual phenomena, but we can approach it using idealization. So, many engineering problems was studied under idealization process.

Back to gas power cycle, gas will always be used in analysis. So, we need to make an ‘air-standard assumption’ on the analysis. Air-standard assumption consist of:

1.The working fluid is air, which continuously circulates in a closed loop and always behaves as an ideal gas.

2.All the processes that make up the cycle are internally reversible. 

3.The combustion process is replaced by a heat-addition process from an external source (Fig. 9–9).

4.The exhaust process is replaced by a heat-rejection process that restores the working fluid to its initial state. [ cengel ]

So, in this analysis we need to use properly assumption using air-standard assumption.

OTTO CYCLE : IDEAL CYCLE FOR SPARK-IGNITION ENGINES

The Otto cycle is the ideal cycle for spark-ignition reciprocating engine and it’s named after Nikolaus A. Otto. Otto cycle

From the figure above we can see how the otto cycle operate. There are 2 cycle, actual and ideal cycle. To make it easier to imagine, I want you to follow me. Imagine that you carry your motorcycle go out from garage. After that you sit above your motorcycle and plug your key. Before your motorcycle is on, you know that inside your motor there is an engine with a piston like the figure above. Your piston is on the lower level, after you plug your key the piston will compress an air and quickly after you started your motor, the spark will ignite the combustion chamber. (figure a). and that’s how the motorcycle active. 

So, to make it easier again, let’s look at the figure b. On the point 1, the piston is on the lower level, and it will be compressed to make a volume of air smaller and its pressure higher. After it reach TDC (Top dead center) the fuel is injected into piston chamber and spark is ignite the combustion between an air and a fuel. So in this process the pressure will significantly increase and suddenly after combustion occurring the piston will be pulled down and the pressure is decreasing. So, after piston at its lower level again, the gas as a result of combustion is thrown away and fresh air is injected again and the process will be same again.  Piston that pull up and down will rotate the shaft and the wheel.

Let’s look at the process, when the fuel is injected. Process 2-3, we can call it heat addition process, because there was a heat energy is go inside the system in form of combustion. After do an energy balance analysis, it can be obtained that heat addition is determine by the difference of internal energy of process 2&3. We know that, process 2-3 occurs on constant volume, so the formulation can be arranged into heat capacity form times temperature. Then, after combustion process, the engine will release residual gas and heat, this is gas will release from muffler and the heat will heat the muffler. Because process 4-1 is also in constant volume, so the amount of heat can be defined as internal energy difference between 4-1.

So, what about work? The main important of engine is to produce a work. Work in otto cycle is in form of rotating wheel. So if your motorcycle move, it because of engine work. How to measure work? It can be analyzed by pressure and volume, or can be simplified by reduce heat in (qin) with heat out (qout). You can check this analysis more advance using thermodynamics literature. So, how to calculate how efficient our engine is? There are an efficiency analysis and for otto cycle it define as the relationship between temperature operation of each process, see equation below. Please refer to cycle process’s figure to know the terms of number.

Then, introducing new variable, namely r and k. r is compression ratio and it’s defined as ratio of maximum volume of piston and minimum volume during operation. And k is defined as specific heat ratio. With some modification, the equation of efficiency can be written as :

Again, please refer to cengel for complete analysis.

So, here we know that compression ratio of engine influence the efficiency of otto engine. Higher of compression ratio will produce a higher efficiency also. But, there are some limitation, if we increase the compression ratio it will produce a knocking in engine and leads to engine problem (broken), another consequence if the r increase is resulting an auto ignition. Every fuel has auto-ignition point. For example gasoline, gasoline has auto-ignition point at some pressure and temperature, so if one of those condition is obtained, there will be ignition without a spark. It will be dangerous. Thus, maybe, in my opinion, great power isn’t always produce a higher efficiency. In designing process, so many factor should be considered until it reach optimum condition and optimum efficiency, that’s more important that only produce power as many as possible.

“Today, I faced a hard problem. I need something that I don’t have yet, I really need it because I already set my goal and the only way to pursue that is having ‘it’. It was money”

Money. I may translate money as something to be converted into something new thing or new services. If we want to use a toilet in public place, we need to pay. If we want to eat, we have to pay for goods, and so on. Recently, money, in my opinion, is a something that should be belonged. It has governing the human being life. Every single thing is money. In advance, even, the bureaucracy/government was able to be controlled under the money superiority. Because of that, we already knew that corruption was widely spreading in the whole world, it just because to obtain a money. Let say, if we have a money, we can buy anything, we can control everything and we are able to make the world obey us. What a crazy thing. To make it balance, on the other hand, if we use the money wisely, we are able to help other, we can donate our money into several sector which need a help, or we can make some business that gave a great impact to society. So, the final decision is up to us, we need to control the money or otherwise, we influenced by money.

I am the person who hasn’t stable yet. I mean, if I face some condition, I rarely face it calmly. So, from this point, I want to tell you that if I face the enormous amount of luxurious, I will fall. But, fortunately, since I was kid, I was never want to have a lot of luxurious. I just want something for what I need, not anymore. However, even though I am able to hold my lust in luxurious, but I often greedy being whispered to obtain money. There was so many way and offering for me, but it was something that isn’t match with my heart. In my religion, we call it ‘halal’. We only accept something that obtained by the right way. As time passed by, human are being tested by the creator. The more advance our life, the heavier our test. So, since I was kid until my early-20 age, I never obsessed by wealth, but now it has almost ruined me.

Yesterday, I almost scream when my notebook are unable to done the task faster, I need faster technology to pursue the other. I want to surpass them as fast as I can. Mechanical design, flow modelling must be done faster than another. But sadly, it unable to obtain. I was sad, angry and so many emotional expression. I have two choices, sacrifice myself of my family. The second one is impossible, so I choose the first one. I want to make a loan. Yes, I emphasize it, it was the first time I do something very risky to me, and I was crazy, I was uncontrolled. Poor me, bastard!

Fortunately, before I apply my load, I met someone I well-know. In my mind, I was a person that have the worst problem. But I was wrong, after having a precious conversation with him, then I feel like I was bounced back, smashed very hard, but I only ungrateful for what I have. The fuck of me, I was never felt this before, I was never stupid just only for money. This is the first time, maybe, I was crazy to pursue ‘the world’. 

Then, I washed my face, and say ‘what I’ve done, god, I was ungrateful person, this is only shitty temporary things, I don’t need to run faster. The only way I need is to enjoy the process, do something good for another’.

I kneel, and, in the night I look at my wife and I thought to myself, “oh dear, now I have someone that always be beside me, leads his ‘ridho’ to reach Jannah, why I should worry about shitty thing about ‘dunya’. Poor me”

How beautiful the life is, when we always feel gratefully about everything He gave to us.

Saat turunan kedua menghasilkan maksima/minima

Akuntansi, Ekonomi Teknik, Kewirausahaan, daftar mata kuliah yang hampir selalu aku hindari. Mata kuiah eksak lebih kusenangi daripada berbasis bisnis. Entah mengapa, saya belum tertarik dengan dunia seperti itu karena selalu mendambakan hidup seperti seorang sayentis. Namun, banyak hal yang tidak kita duga dan menjalani hal tersebut merupakan keharusan.

Kehidupan selo dan kurang terstruktur menjadi keseharianku. Lebih kupilih membaca artikel sains daripada memikirkan prospek ekonomi terkini. Di sisi lain, di dalam hati aku ingin membuat suatu start-up demi mengejar kreativitas. Semuanya seperti terwujud setelah menikah. Kehidupan yang berubah drastis hampir -+105 derajat, tidak sampai 180 derajat, lebai. Mulailah kehidupan terstruktur yang menuntut multitasking

Di tengah studiku, aku memutuskan untuk menjalani kehidupan berumah tangga, bukan apa-apa, ya hanya lillahita'ala saja. Tanggungan keluarga memaksa merubah tatanan hidup dari kondisi steady state menjadi transient. Melencengnya, hidup sebelum nikah merupakan zona nyaman yang katakanlah sebuah variabel a. Dimana, a tersebut tak bernilai terhadap variabel pengubah seperti waktu. Seiring berjalannya waktu, setelah menikah, nilai a diturunkan terhadap dt -> da/dt. Penurunan pertama berdampak pada ter-organisir-nya kehidupan dan menurutku saat dt dikuadratkan, sesuai fungsi parabolis, turunan kedua menghasilkan nilai maksima/minima. Jadi saat keluar dari zona nyaman pada waktu dt^2 maka kehidupan akan berada dalam level maksima dan minima.

2 hari ini aku mulai menyadari bahwa konsep maksima minima bukan berlandas pada kemuktiannya diri atau bergelimangnya harta.

Maksima. Sebisa mungkin berkarya dan semaksimal mungkin berusaha untuk mendapati ridho-Nya. Nah, disini saya dan istri, ditengah studiku dan istriku yang membantu start-up kawan, kami-pun mempunyai start-up kami sendiri. Usaha yang dimulai dari 0, manajemen yang masih terus disempurnakan dan bagaimana cara memutar uang demi konsep sustainability enterpreneur. Di sisi lain, usaha maksimal juga pada studi yang menuntut bahwa bukan hanya menyelesaikan masalah melaikan memahami setiap filosofi dari setiap persamaan dan menerapkannya dalam kehidupan. Rumit, pasti, enjoy iya.

Minima. Konsep minima bukan seperti roda yang berputar. Minima disini dimaknai bahwa sekeras kita berusaha hanya sebuah piranti yang membawa kita pada ke-ridho-an-Nya. Domain kita hanya berusaha dan biarlah Dia yang menentukan hasil berdasarkan skenario terbaik-Nya. Disinilah minima, memaknai bahwa kita ialah insan kecil sangat kecil yang sangat minimal levelnya terhadap sang penguasa Alam semesta. 

Terkadang, saat turunan kedua persamaan kehidupan disatukan, ditengah lelah luar biasa, didalam sujud akan sampai pada titik bahwa 'aku hanya ingin berterimakasih akan setiap karunia-Mu, Ya Allah'.

Begitulah, saat (d)^2a/(dt)^2 diterapkan.
